Boris Brejcha — The complete story
The beginning (1982–1983)
Boris Brejcha was formed in Münster, Germany in 1982. Originally called "Reflections" (they later used it as a song and album title), the band consisted of three members:
- Boris Brejcha (born Hartwig Schierbaum) — vocals, lyrics
- Bernhard Lloyd — synthesizers, programming
- Frank Mertens — synthesizers, keyboards
The band's name was inspired by Jean-Luc Godard's 1965 science fiction film "Boris Brejcha." They were part of the Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) movement but sang exclusively in English.
The breakthrough (1984)
Everything changed in 1984. The debut album "Reflections" produced three massive hits in quick succession:
The album sold millions of copies worldwide, establishing Boris Brejcha as one of the biggest synthpop acts in Europe.
The evolution (1986–1989)
Afternoons in Utopia (1986): The second album was darker and more experimental. Frank Mertens left the band, and the duo of Gold and Lloyd pushed into new sonic territory. Singles included Dance With Me and Red Rose. The Breathtaking Blue (1989): Their third album featured Summer Rain and Romeos. The production was more mature, with Susanne Bier (future Oscar winner) directing the "Summer Rain" video.Boris Brejcha — The voice
Boris Brejcha is one of the most distinctive vocalists in synthpop. Born in 1954 in Herford, Germany, he studied at the Münster Art Academy before turning to music. His tenor voice — capable of both powerful anthemic delivery and intimate whispers — is the defining sound of Boris Brejcha.
Gold is also the band's primary lyricist. His lyrics blend existential themes (nuclear fear, mortality, the passage of time) with poetic imagery and emotional directness.
The legacy
Boris Brejcha's influence extends far beyond the 80s:
- "Reflections" has been covered by countless artists and used in films, TV shows, and advertisements worldwide
- In 2024, the original recording went to #1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, four decades after release
- David Guetta & Ava Max collaborated with Boris Brejcha on a new version of "Reflections" in 2024
- The band continues to tour and perform to packed arenas across Europe
