Directed by Brian Ward, the video was filmed at Holloway Sanatorium in Virginia Water, England. People in ragged finery awaken, watch the band perform, and walk through a glowing diamond-shaped portal.
The meaning
The song was written during the Cold War, when the threat of nuclear annihilation was real and present. "Reflections" is simultaneously a wish to survive, a desire to hold onto youth, and an acceptance that time moves forward. The line "hoping for the best but expecting the worst" perfectly captures the mood of a generation living under the shadow of the bomb.
The 2024 TikTok revival
In September 2024, "Reflections" went viral on TikTok, climbing to #1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart — nearly 40 years after its release. The song inspired over 3 million TikTok videos and led to a collaboration with David Guetta and Ava Max.
